Every year our churches singles ward makes the trip to Yosemite to hike Half Dome, a 16.4 mile roundtrip hike that is absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth it if you are physically able to do it. I thought it sounded like an exciting experience so I joined a gym and “trained” for a month to get ready. Several days after Chad returned safely home from working in New Jersey we made the journey to the top of Half Dome and back. I call it the Hike to Hell and back. It was definitely the hardest physical activity I’ve ever done in my entire life. There were lots of tears, blisters and internal dialogue that wasn’t church appropriate by any means.
Look how happy we are before the hike – I had no idea what was coming and did not have the same happy smile AFTER the hike. But I mean, at least I have a fancy new hiking backpack right? We definitely packed way to much stuff for the hike & learned a lot about what exactly we need to make it to the top of Half Dome.
The distance was a bit much for me so we decided to wild camp and set up a spot with blankets and some pillows to try and get some rest and break up the hike a bit. BAD IDEA. We cooled down & it was hard to get moving again. Next time around I would just keep hiking and not stop to try and get some rest.
After we made it to the top..and back down.
I couldn’t have done it without him.
This does not even show how steep that mountain is. I was weeping the entire way up. I’m not even kidding. This was the worst part! You look on either side of you and its a HUGE drop off. You hold onto wire cables and pray to goodness the traction of our shoes keeps you on the mountain. *shivers* yuck.
