I am finally starting to get around to the HOUSE TOUR. I have been very slowly, because I have a baby – give me a break!, putting together & decorating our home. We are currently undecided if we are staying here for the 3 years after our 1 year lease is up, of if we are moving closer to the Dental School. SO. In a year, I’m sure I will have WAY more to add when I know if we are staying or not. First up – The GUEST ROOM….There are still a few more projects I want to tackle….but this is my progress so far…..
I started THIS board on Pinterest months ago and was SO excited when we found a house that would allow us a guest room. 1) because I wanted to decorate a guest room, but 2) because we would have room for people to come visit us & not have to sleep on the couch (SO COME VISIT US!)! This was my Pinspiration for the Guest Room – Vintage, rustic, shabby chic…..Oh, and on a budget.
So, to begin. We needed a bed….The room is pretty small, but we figured more couples than singles would be visiting (Although, you singles are welcome!) so I figured a queen bed would be best. I began looking at local furniture places, goodwill & ended up settling on Craigslist. I mean you can’t really go wrong. I found a few that I were okay, but then I found the ONE. It came with the queen bed headboard, frame, box spring, mattress, nightstand AND dresser with mirror. It was perfect. Vintage styled, white & gorgeous. So I had hubby meet me with his van at the storage unit 40 minutes away, 40 minutes is actually 17 hours with a screaming baby in the car. When we got to the storage unit I was mortified. The ‘white’ set was actually a weird off yellow color & I was SO disappointed. One part of me thought I could find something else and to move on, but the other part, the part that won, knew that with a little bit of paint I could fix it right up. So, Chad bartered the seller down $100, and we left with it all for $250.00.
I was all, dang I’ve been a blogger for a few years, I’ve been on Pinterest. I can totally do this. Boy was I freaking wrong. Thank goodness for a good friend of mine, Pam, from PB&J Stories – who literally held my hand via text message every 30 seconds when I had no idea what I was doing. After 2 weeks of sanding, priming, painting, painting, sanding, top coat, top coat. I was done & I couldn’t have been happier to be done. It was a BIG first project. It turned out, and I am pleased with it. However, I WILL be redoing it in the future. Even after sanding the bejesus out of it – I could NOT get to the wood base, so my ‘distressed shabby chic’ ended up just being ‘distressed’. Because that makes sense. It works, but I’m not really happy with it. And after investing so much money into the set & paint – I might as well make it perfect.
As far as bedding goes….This was the biggest challenge for me. I couldn’t see spending 300$ on bedding (although I would have loved to!). So I found a ruffly bedding set at Target. I had to order it online because they only carried the white online. It was originally $90.00 – but after gift cards we had saved up and free shipping it ended up being only $70.00.
I just put a small collection of frames (that I painted) on the dresser. I found the flowers for 75% off at Michaels – and am definitely looking for a few cute little knick-knacks on Etsy (any shop recommendations?). That adorable quote is from Pearls & Pastries. (Follow her on Instagram, she’s got amazing pictures & an awesome heads up on her Etsy sales!)
The nightstand: Some books, a massager, clock….Pretty simple.
Paint to refinish: $120 – Still have 3/4 of it left! (So if you need something painted – call me!)
Mosquito Net: $10
Printed Quote: $5
Nightstand Clock: $5
Everything else I had on hand!
-Redo the paint job. I really liked it at first, but now I don’t. I want to really sand it all down and completely redo it. Stain it first and then lightly brush stroke white over it so it is 100% distressed shabby chic. Hopefully will do this after the holidays.
-More decorations for the dresser – Etsy here I come! (Any fun shops you recommend?)
-Knobs for the dresser. That aren’t a trillion dollars.
-Purchase rug for the side of the bed
What are you thoughts? HONESTLY. Any tips, any fun recommendations, Etsy shops? Pinterest ideas? I realllllly want to make this room so much more than it is.
