So excited to be sharing this easy Do-It-Yourself today! I absolutely love being a part of the DecoArt team! Presley and I jump up and down every time our box arrives on the doorstep! We got one last week and I couldn’t wait to finally get to work on putting this together!! I originally saw this idea by Cindy on her blog CinSarah here. As soon as I saw that I pulled up Pinterest and my brain just went crazy with all the possibilities for this! Great for succulents, fake plants, or even napkins and utensils when you have company over!
About the wood: So, do you see the purple slash? That is Home Depot’s 70% off wood. I got the entire piece for less than $2 and used it for this project AND for another. The darker wood piece is just a piece of pallet that was leftover and in our garage for either a fire, or a project. I used that as the base & built around that. THIS was the hardest part – all the measuring and lining things up. That clearance wood at Home Depot is clearance for a reason & I had to work around a few knots, and some bowing. Hubby cut my lines & after I did a quick sand. I sat down with my tiny tool box and got to work.
Note to self. Don’t do a project like this alone. It was so hard holding the pieces together AND nailing it together – but I made do. I used my feet, my hands, some weights & ultimately brute force & got the thing together. This would be much easier if you had proper tools, an extra hand, or patience for your husband to get home. I’m not patient.
Next up, we used DecoArts stain in Maple and went to town on the entire thing – this is the part Presley loves to help. It doesn’t need to look perfect so she is the staining master & actually getting pretty good at it.
Next up, I layered on DecoArts Chalky Paint in ‘Everlasting’ (white, white!) in a dry brush technique, making sure to paint in all the same direction, but to be sloppy with it. I wanted this to be very distressed looking (distressed is best-my life motto)
I scoured the cabinets for some extra Mason Jars and found 5 that would fit perfectly in the box. Then, I snipped short some hydrangeas I found at Goodwill for $2 a bunch and put those in the mason jars until they looked full and abundant!
Of course I am a sucker for little finishing touches so I snagged these draw pulls for 50c each at Deseret Industries & had the hubby screw them into either side so that the box can be easily moved and picked up.
Not that hard at all huh? What projects do you think we are working on this week? I’ve got a few sneak peaks on Instagram if you want to stop by!
