AH! Germany! Literally cannot wait until we get to go back and explore more of it! As soon as I found out we were headed to Garmisch I was excited for a lot of things – but I counted down the days until we could go see the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. I did a lot of research online to make sure we were actually able to see and do everything we wanted to! We purchased our tickets online a few days in advance for a specific time – a tour is REQUIRED to get inside of the castle and tickets can sell out quickly. This castle I definitely want to see more than once, but the interior tour is a good thing to do just once. We didn’t want to change it or wait in any lines so we snagged tickets here (make sure you pick a time & language when booking). You pick your tickets up at the ticket office before heading up to the castle.
There are two separate castles: Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau. Tickets can be purchased to visit both, but we opted to just visit Neuschwanstein before heading to Munich for the weekend. We parked and then wandered through town looking at a few shops, enjoying Hot Chocolate and getting smashed coins for Presleys penny book. You can walk to the top of the hill to get to the castle (free), take a train (2 euro pp) or as we opted to do – go on a carriage ride (8 euro pp)! Presley and I felt like princesses sitting in the front of the carriage as the horses took us up to the castle. -I posted some videos on my Instagram story if you want to check it out!- The carriage takes you about 3/4 of the way up and the rest of the way you can walk up an inclined hill to get to the base of the castle. Once inside, you can walk around the castle grounds while waiting for your tour time. The views are pretty incredible. Inside the castle you are not allowed to take pictures but it is definitely true that King Ludwig was pretty darn crazy – see pictures from inside of castle here.
After you tour the castle you can take a path around the castle to get to a bridge that gives you the perfect vantage point for taking pictures of the castle. I mean, I could have sat here all day long taking in this view. I get to cross ‘FALL’ off the list – now I just need to go back to see it every single season.
