There are so many Outlander filming locations and book references in Edinburgh. We didn’t have the time to get to them all & some were closed because of Covid – but here are a few that we made it to!
Bakehouse Close
One of the most heart wrenching scenes in Outlander. Bakehouse Close is where Jamie’s Print Shop is located and where Claire walks up the steps to enter his shop to find him for the first time after returning 20 years later. Only the close and stairs were used for filming, but they are open day & night so you can stop by anytime.
Holyrood Palace
No actual Outlander scenes were filmed at Holyrood Palace but I still recommend touring it. We did & I loved every minute of the audio guide we listened to while walking around the palace. In the book series Jamie and Claire live here with the Bonnie Prince for 2 months. Book tickets in advance here.
Canongate Kirk
I really wish the Kirk was open because I would have loved to peek inside. The Canongate Kirk is a reference from the Outlander books when Colum wants to talk to Jamie + Claire away from Holyrood House.
The Worlds End Pub
Unfortunately no filming took place here but it is featured in the books. We went in for a meal + a dram and got to talking to the bartender who said the cast members used their restrooms all the time when they were filming on the royal mile.
Tweedale Court
After Claire returns and accompanies Jamie an an errand she runs into Fergus on this street. One of my favorite reunions.
Super bummed we didn’t make it to the Signet Library (because I love libraries) but they were closed because of Covid. The Library is used in both the books and in the tv series. Next Scotland visit I will definitely make it a priority to go inside to peek around! The other stop I wanted to make was at the Summerhall Academy Lecture hall where Claire is seen attending classes as the only women. I sent an email to try to get more info about seeing inside but never heard back! Craigmiller Castle was also a stop I wanted to see but we just couldn’t squeeze it into our already packed week!
Alright, I think I’ll be done with Outlander stuff for a bit now before anyone realized I have a problem. Droughtlander is almost over & Season 6 is going to start filming in January!
