“Belluno is in the northern part of the Veneto-Venezia region, just where the flat plains of the south meet the dolomites and mountains to the north”
Belluno is a perfect weekend staycation getaway located in the Veneto region approximately 2 hours north of Vicenza. It is a great location year round and has family friendly activies for each season. It also acts as a great home base for exploring some of the smaller towns of Treviso, Bolzano, Cortina, as well as being close to many of the trailheads to hikes in the Dolomites.
Things to see in the town of Belluno:
Exploring with kids? Set up a quick treasure hunt to find the 3 ancient gates to the city of Belluno (named Porta Rugo, Dojona & Dante) they surround the city so you’ll see everything, while simultaneously keeping kids entertained….Gelato is the prize!
Museo Civico di Palazzo Fulcis: One of the best preserved 18th-century palaces in the Veneto region houses roughly 600 notable regional works of art. See hours & ticket prices here.
Palazzo Rettori – originally built in 1491 and was the Town Hall in medieval times. Many rooms inside remain in original condition and as it is still in use, unable to currently tour.
Cattedrale di San Martino – originally raised on top of a paleo-christian church in 850. It has been rebuilt several times most recently in 1873 after an earthquake. Take a peek inside if it’s open – it’s a beautiful quick stop and right by Palazzo Rettori.
Visit the square called Piazza dei Martiri (Martyrs’ Sq), named after the four partisans hanged here in WWI. Mostly a grassy area with some benches. Great to let kids run around chasing pigeons, or to stop and have a snack.
